About
We started this firm because most engineering problems are diagnosed too late.
North Pine Work is a small, senior team working on infrastructure, backend systems and security: the layers of a product nobody notices until they fail.
Why we work this way
Most consultancies scale by adding layers between the client and the engineer doing the work. We've deliberately stayed small enough that the person who scopes your project is the person who builds it.
That means we take on fewer clients at a time, and we say no to work that doesn't fit our team's actual expertise, rather than staffing around the gap.
What we won't do
We won't recommend a rebuild when a smaller fix will hold. We won't bill for a security review that's really a checklist. And we won't take on a maintenance contract for a system we don't believe we can keep healthy.
Principles
How we make decisions
Write it down
Every assessment ends in a document, not a slide deck. Decisions should survive the meeting where they were made.
Prefer boring
A well-understood technology beats a novel one, unless the novel one solves a problem the boring one genuinely can't.
Hand off cleanly
Our engagements end with your team able to operate what we built. Not dependent on us to keep it running.
